Genetic linkage map of fishes of the genus Xiphophorus (Teleostei: Poeciliidae).

چکیده
Analysis of genotypes of 76 polymorphic loci in more than 2600 backcross hybrid individuals derived from intra- and interspecific genetic crosses of fishes of the genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae) resulted in the identification of 17 multipoint linkage groups containing 55 protein-coding loci and one sex chromosome-linked pigment pattern gene. Multipoint linkage analyses identified highly probable gene orders for 10 linkage groups. The total genome length was estimated to be approximately 18 Morgans. Comparisons of the Xiphophorus linkage map with those of other fishes, amphibians and mammals suggested that fish gene maps are remarkably similar and probably retain many syntenic groups present in the ancestor of all vertebrates.

Protein polymorphisms, segregation in genetic crosses and genetic distances among fishes of the genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae).
The products of 49 protein-coding loci were examined by starch gel electrophoresis for populational variation in six species of Xiphophorus fishes and/or segregation in intra-and interspecific backcross and intercross hybrids. Electrophoretic variation was observed for 29 of the 35 locus products in a survey of 42 population samples. The highest frequency of polymorphic loci observed in noninbr...
متن کاملPolymorphisms, linkage and mapping of four enzyme loci in the fish genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae).
Electrophoretic variants at four additional enzyme loci--two esterases (Est-2, Est-3), retinal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-1) and mannose phosphate isomerase (MPI)--among three species and four subspecies of fish of the genus Xiphophorus were observed. Electrophoretic patterns in F1 hybrid heterozygotes confirmed the monomeric structures of MPI and the esterase and the tetrametric structure of L...
متن کاملStrong reproductive skew among males in the multiply mated swordtail Xiphophorus multilineatus (Teleostei).
Male swordtails in the genus Xiphophorus display a conspicuous ventral elongation of the caudal fin, the sword, which arose through sexual selection due to female preference. Females mate regularly and are able to store sperm for at least 6 months. If multiple mating is frequent, this would raise the intriguing question about the role of female choice and male-male competition in shaping the ma...
متن کاملGrowth and male ornamentation in Xiphophorus montezumae
Juvenile growth rate is an important life-history trait that affects the size at maturity, and may influence the development of sexual ornamentation. The sword of several species of the genus Xiphophorus (Teleostei: Poeciliidae) is an elaborate secondary sexual trait that confers an advantage in terms of sexual selection, counterbalanced by locomotive and predatory costs. This study assesses di...
متن کاملAn overview of the biological characteristics of common platy Xiphophorus maculatus (Teleostei: Poeciliidae) and its cultivation and maintenance in the aquarium.
The present study was conducted in order to review the biological characteristics and breeding and maintenance methods of common platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) as one of the popular aquarium species in the world. The literature review showed that this species is native to subtropical and tropical regions including Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. In terms of diet, common platy is omnivoro...
